Introduction
This guide walks you through unboxing, mounting, powering, basic controls, and DMX operation of the Rockville Five-Eye light. The steps are simple and beginner-friendly—no prior lighting or DMX experience required.
You’ll need:
- Included: Five-Eye light, PowerCON power cable, DMX cable, user manual (with three DMX channel guides)
- Optional: DMX controller, lighting clamps, truss or mounting surface
Step-by-Step Instructions
1) Unbox and Identify What’s Included
- Light: Rockville Five-Eye fixture
- Cables: PowerCON power cable (blue locking end) and a DMX cable
- Manual: Includes three DMX guides explaining each channel mode and fader map
2) Choose a Mounting Method
The light ships with an adjustable bracket.
- Adjust the angle: Loosen the side knobs, set your angle, then tighten.
- Set on the floor: Use the bracket as a stand on any flat surface.
- Mount to truss:
- Use any of the three bracket holes.
- Attach one or two lighting clamps using the clamp bolt, washer, and nut. Tighten firmly.
- Hang on truss and secure with the butterfly screws.
Tip: For today’s demo in the video, two end holes were used for two clamps.
3) Power the Light
- Insert the blue PowerCON end into POWER IN on the light until it clicks, then twist to lock.
- Plug the other end into AC power. The light powers on automatically.
- Optional: Use POWER OUT to electrically daisy-chain additional lights on the same truss.
4) DMX Connections (If Using Multiple Lights or a Controller)
- From controller to first light: Controller DMX OUT → DMX IN on Light 1.
- Daisy-chain additional lights: Light 1 DMX OUT → DMX IN on Light 2, and so on.
5) Learn the Back-Panel Controls
- Display: Shows the current mode and address.
- Buttons:
- MENU: Cycle menus/modes
- UP/DOWN: Change values
- ENTER: Save changes
6) Select a DMX Channel Mode
Use MENU until you see one of the following on the display:
- A001 = 7-channel mode (effects-focused)
- H001 = 19-channel mode (effects + per-bulb control)
- h001 = 15-channel mode (per-bulb color control)
Use UP/DOWN to set the DMX address, then ENTER to save.
7) Standalone Operation (No Controller)
A) Auto Programs
- Go to AUTO mode and select from sequences 00–15.
- 15 acts as a color fade.
- Adjust SPEED in the next menu (higher = faster), then ENTER to save.
B) Sound Mode
- Choose one of five sound-active modes.
- The light reacts to loud sounds in the room.
C) Manual Color (RGB Dimmers)
- Use Rxxx, Gxxx, Bxxx menus to set each color level and press ENTER to save.
- Combine values to create a custom color.
8) DMX Control – 7-Channel Mode (A001)
Typical fader layout (consult your controller and the included DMX guide):
- Fader 1: Master Dimmer (raise fully for maximum output)
- Fader 2: Strobe
- Values 0–4: Engage strobe
- >4: Increase strobe speed
- Fader 3: Effect Selector
- Some effects require specific color dimmers to be up
- Example: For red-based effects, raise Fader 5 (Red), then set Fader 3 to 96–110
- For multi-color gradient, raise Faders 5/6/7 (R/G/B) and set Fader 3 to 201–215
- Fader 4: Effect Speed (faster as you raise it)
- Faders 5–7: Red, Green, Blue Dimmers
9) DMX Control – 15-Channel Mode (h001)
Control each bulb’s color independently:
- Faders 1–3: Bulb 1 (R, G, B)
- Faders 4–6: Bulb 2 (R, G, B)
- Faders 7–9: Bulb 3 (R, G, B)
- Faders 10–12: Bulb 4 (R, G, B)
- Faders 13–15: Bulb 5 (R, G, B)
10) DMX Control – 19-Channel Mode (H001)
Combines effects and per-bulb control. Use the manual’s 19-channel guide for the full map.
11) Master–Slave Operation (Controller Optional)
Use one light as Master and other lights as Slaves:
- Cable chain: Master DMX OUT → DMX IN on Slave 1 → continue chaining.
- Set each Slave to any DMX channel mode (A001/H001/h001).
- On the Master, select Auto, Sound, or Custom Color.
- A small dot on the Slave display’s bottom-right flashes to indicate it’s receiving the Master signal.
- All Slaves will mirror the Master’s mode/color.
Troubleshooting & FAQs
Power & Startup
- Light won’t power on
- Reinsert the PowerCON until you hear/feel the click, then twist to lock.
- Verify the AC outlet and cable.
- Fixture reboots when moving cables
- Ensure the PowerCON is fully locked and strain-relieved.
Mounting & Safety
- Light shifts or sags
- Tighten the side knobs firmly.
- Confirm clamp bolts, washers, and nuts are fully tightened.
- Use properly rated clamps for your truss.
DMX Signal & Addressing
- No DMX response
- Check cable direction: Controller/Previous Light DMX OUT → DMX IN of the next device.
- Verify all fixtures are set to the intended mode (A001/H001/h001).
- In 7-channel setups where all lights act together, give them the same DMX address (e.g., A001).
- If using a controller, ensure the correct scanner/device is active.
- Only some effects work
- Many effects require color dimmers to be raised. For example, for red effects, raise Red first.
- Strobe not working or too slow
- In 7-channel mode, set Fader 2 > 0 to enable, and raise it further for speed.
- Effects are too slow/fast
- Adjust Speed: Standalone = SPEED menu; DMX = Fader 4.
Sound Mode
- No reaction to music
- Increase the room volume; ensure you have selected one of the five sound modes.
- Move the fixture closer to the sound source.
Master–Slave
- Slaves not following the Master
- Confirm Master DMX OUT → Slave DMX IN cabling order.
- Slaves must be set to a DMX mode (A001/H001/h001).
- Look for the flashing dot on Slaves to confirm they’re receiving the Master signal.
Channel Modes (Quick Clarifier)
- 7-Channel (A001): Run global effects across all bulbs.
- 15-Channel (h001): Set individual bulb colors (five bulbs × RGB).
- 19-Channel (H001): Both effects and per-bulb control.
Conclusion
You’ve mounted your Five-Eye, powered it safely, explored standalone modes (Auto, Sound, RGB), and learned how to run it via DMX in 7-, 15-, and 19-channel modes—including Master–Slave chaining. For specific fader values and full channel maps, refer to the DMX guides in your manual.
